Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH) is a disorder characterized by the enlargement of the prostate gland. This condition is a common part of aging among men and occurs mainly after the age of 40. Some men might not be aware that they have BPH since there are cases where symptoms are lacking. However, a lot more cases include common enlarged prostate symptoms such as, a need to urinate frequently, particularly during the night; pain, burning and difficulty in starting and stopping urination; weak urine flow or dribbling; and a constant feeling that the bladder is not completely empty.

For men who do not experience enlarged prostate symptoms, they might not know that they have BPH until they suddenly find it difficult to urinate. This type of acute symptom called acute urinary retention may be triggered by taking over-the-counter medicines for colds and allergies. These drugs contain a decongestant called sympathomimetic which carries the potential side effect of preventing the bladder from opening or relaxing to allow urine to pass through. Acute urinary retention can also be caused by excessive drinking, cold temperatures and prolonged periods of immobility.

Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH) or Benign Prostatic Hypertrophy is a condition characterized by the enlargement of the prostate gland; a common occurrence since it is quite normal for men’s prostates to enlarge as they age. The growth of the prostate has two main phases; the first is during puberty, when the size of the gland doubles; and the second is at around age 25, when the gland starts growing again. The second growth phase often results in BPH years later. Some of the more common enlarged prostate symptoms include weak stream of urine, difficulty in starting urination, dribbling and leaking of urine, a strong and sudden desire to urinate especially at night, a feeling of not emptying the bladder, and in some cases, blood in the urine.

Treatment of Enlarged Prostate

The prostate is a walnut-sized gland that forms part of the male reproductive system. The gland is made of two lobes, or regions, enclosed by an outer layer of tissue. As the diagrams show, the prostate is located in front of the rectum and just below the bladder, where urine is stored. The prostate also surrounds the urethra, the canal through which urine passes out of the body.
For most men, these nightly bathroom runs may be the first sign of an enlarged prostate. Other symptoms may include trouble starting a stream of urine, leaking, or dribbling. And, like gray hair, an enlarged prostate is a natural by-product of getting older, doctors say. Trouble is, the nightly bathroom runs become more frequent — eventually edging their way into the daytime routine.

Risk factors
Although it is not known why only some men develop BPO, it is clear that advancing age is the main risk factor. You should visit your doctor promptly if you develop urinary problems because BPO is easier to treat if the treatment starts early.

Understanding enlarged prostate symptoms is important to keep you healthy. When an individual stops growing, the prominent changes that happen in the body will end as well. Then, the aging process starts and, once again, changes happen both internally and externally. For middle-aged men, maintaining the health of the prostate is one important thing that should be considered. In relation to the function of the prostate and its location, a healthy prostate condition is linked to the health of both the reproductive system and the urinary system.

In some cases, the prostate becomes enlarged as men grow older. In fact, the risk of enlarged prostate is higher the older a man gets. The prostate is located surrounding the bladder and thus, common enlarged prostate symptoms are normally related to the bladder where the enlarged prostate gland will press against it. As the prostate enlarges furthermore, the pressure increases, and the bladder starts showing common enlarged prostate symptoms, such as difficulty to start urinating, problem to completely empty the bladder, and in several occasions, uncontrollable small releases of urine.
