Prostate Cancer – New Treatment

I don’t want to scare you, but I know several men who have already been diagnosed with prostate cancer. Luckily, I’m not one of them. When I first began experiencing problems in urinating like not able to urinate completely and frequent urges to urinate, I did not think that it might be cancer. However, after I tested positive in the PSA test, I started looking for a way to treat it. I was aware of many traditional treatments including the TURP which involved inserting a tube through the penis hole.

I was pretty scared of that so I started searching for prostate cancer new treatment. The cancer is caused by malignant cells that destroy the cells which function properly. Initially, these cells develop in the prostate but in later stages of the cancer; they spread to other parts of the body through the blood.

Hormones called androgens – especially testosterone – support the growth of prostate cells and therefore the first step in treatment is using drugs that inhibit the hormones. This prevents the growth of the malignant cells, but only temporarily, because the cancer overcomes the resistance of the hormone blockers. People under hormone drugs experience side effects like impotence, tiredness, sweating and reduction in the strength of bones and muscles.

Prostate cancer new treatment has the advantage that it can be done only with the help of drugs and avoids surgery completely. The new drugs are a combination of drugs – one that opposes the action of androgens on the tumor and others that inhibit the growth of the cancer. Moreover, this treatment does not have serious side effects. These drugs are still undergoing clinical trials to determine their effectiveness.

There are some types of cancer which are resistant to the hormone blockers. For such cases, there are drugs that work by inhibiting the action of androgen receptor cells in the tumor, preventing the growth of cancer.

There is more research going on at various universities and laboratories to find prostate cancer new treatment. However, till such treatment is commonly available, you will need to depend on the traditional means which include the removal of parts of the prostate or the whole prostate.
