High Riding Prostate
The prostate is a gland that is situated between the bladder and the penis. It surrounds the urethra which is the tube that passes urine. The urethra also functions to release semen during sexual intercourse. The function of the prostate gland is to secrete the milky fluid that is released along with the semen. This is an alkaline fluid which helps to counter the acidity in the vagina and helps to prolong the life of the sperm.
If you have experienced a serious injury to the pelvis, either through a fall and fracture, sometimes the bladder and the prostate might get detached from the urethra. In this case, the prostate becomes movable and shifts upwards and is therefore called a high riding prostate. Another reason the prostate becomes high riding is due to the swelling in the pelvis due to the injury.
To find out whether the prostate has detached or not, the doctor performs a DRE procedure – a digital rectal examination. In this procedure, the doctor covers his finger with a glove, inserts it inside the rectum and tries to feel the position of the prostate.
If it is a case of high riding prostate, the doctor will not be able to touch the prostate or touch it only with the tip of the finger since it would have receded upwards. However, this is not a confirmatory test. It is possible not to feel the prostate even when the gland is at its normal position and to feel it even when it is riding high.
In case of severe trauma to the pelvic region, you may not be able to pass urine. The doctors use a catheter to remove accumulated urine from the bladder. However, in the case of high riding prostate, the doctors avoid using a catheter as it may pose a risk. Therefore, it is important to check the position of the prostate.
