Enlarged Prostate Erectile Dysfunction
When I was searching for treatments for enlarged prostate, erectile dysfunction was one of my prime concerns. Inability to get an erection and keeping it is one of the common side effects of the enlarged prostate treatment. Medical statistics show a 10 percent chance of erectile dysfunction.
It was important for me to know the chances because then I could decide whether to live with the symptoms of enlarged prostate like frequent urges to urinate in the night or to take the risk of affecting my sex life.
The most common treatment procedure for enlarged prostate is the TURP – transurethral resection of the prostate. In this method, the surgeon inserts a thin-section tube through the urethra and cuts away pieces of the prostate using a wire loop. This method is preferred because the recovery time is less compared to other procedures and there is no need to make an external incision to reach the prostate.
However, in any treatment of enlarged prostate erectile dysfunction is a common side effect which can last for up to a year. However, many physicians say that if you have no problems in getting an erection before the surgery, you will not have a problem after the surgery. The surgery, however, will not cure an existing problem.
Even if there is no problem with erection, the chances of backward ejaculation are higher after treatment. This means that during orgasm, the semen is ejaculated backwards into the bladder instead of outwards through the penis. Sometimes this is also known as dry orgasm. The semen is later on flushed out with the urine. There are medicines that deal with this situation by blocking the opening of the bladder during ejaculation.
The important thing is to discuss with your physician about any specific treatment for enlarged prostate erectile dysfunction being one of the issues. Once you are clear about your priorities, then you can make an informed decision.
